When I was pregnant, I researched babywearing extensively and decided to get a ring sling, a mei tai, and a pouch sling, and we later received an Ergo from friends. I sort of wanted to buy a Moby wrap (they look so cuddly!), but $40 was too expensive when I already had three other babywearing mechanisms. And the wrap also seemed like it was best for the tiny baby stage, and I didn’t want to spend all that money for something that was only going to last me five months or so.
When I saw the instructions for this no-sew wrap a few months ago, I bookmarked it so that I could make one for the next baby. I also like to give new mothers gifts that I would have liked from experienced mothers that I wouldn’t necessarily have known to buy or make on my own. Most good slings are also a little on the expensive side, and a Moby is just a rectangular piece of cloth with a logo; why can’t I do that myself?
I bought a really pretty pink and white jersey knit fabric with a coupon at Hobby Lobby a couple months ago when I found out my friend was having a girl, and I finally got around to making it last night. It took me awhile to figure out the best way to fold the gigantic piece of cloth so that everything was aligned, but once I did it didn’t take long at all. Nathan was sleeping, so I used his lamb to model it.
I put Nathan in it the next morning, and it worked great! It was really comfortable even with my almost 11-month-old. I folded it both ways, rolled it up, and tied a couple pieces of white yarn around it.
I spent $34 for the cloth (though I’m thinking there are cheaper patterns and other deals I could have found), and it makes three wraps. The edges do curl a little since it isn’t hemmed, but I didn’t think it affected the appearance of the wrap at all.
