"The early Protestants were accused by the papists of having a faith that was 'too glad to be true,' as C.S. Lewis once said. The Protestants count not possibly have had the truth because they were too happy. They laughed and enjoyed life—and that, according to the Catholics—simply could not be biblical. ...To our great shame, unbelievers never accuse us of being too happy to have true faith. But that is exactly the heart of Christianity that the world needs to see. Full-blooded, vital, undiluted Christianity rings in the ears of small, shriveled souls as a message too glad to be true."
