I love the experience of having a firstborn. Our pediatrician, a father of three, at Nathan's two-month well visit asked us what he was doing developmentally and added, "But they don't really do anything at this age." I wanted to laugh because every night we had been completely enthralled by every little move and sound he made. There is a video I took of him when he was a couple weeks old where he's mostly just laying there except that he's moving his arms in a really cute way, and I used to watch that video over and over again because I thought it was the sweetest thing ever. I don't know if little things like that will be quite as entertaining the next time around since we will have seen all the cool stuff that comes after the "just moving his arms around a little bit" stage.I love that there is this little life unfolding before us and that we get to see all these new stages with fresh eyes ourselves. I've been saying "uh-oh" to him for the past couple months or so, when he falls or drops something or just randomly because his "hm-hm" (said with the "uh-oh" inflection) is so cute. He says bye-bye occasionally when prompted, or sometimes I think he is saying ball when he sees a ball. But uh-oh is harder, I think. It's not an object that he can see. He has to recognize appropriate circumstances in which he says uh-oh, or "hm-hm." Anyway, he's started saying uh-oh at the most appropriate times, and it is so surprising every time. He understands! It's so weird to me how language develops and babies and toddlers learn things so quickly.
I know that probably it is that unique that my almost 14-month-old says "uh-oh" at the right time, but that's the awesome thing about being a first-time mom: I don't know any better. So as far as I'm concerned, my kid is a genius. And really cute one, at that.
